Progression of Symptoms of Parkinson's Disease
Unfortunately, there are no tests or assessments that can be performed to determine your loved one's likelihood of experiencing any of the symptoms that are listed above.
Additionally, everyone's experience with Parkinson's Disease is unique. Meaning that one individual may experience several of these symptoms and another individual may only experience a few.
Symptoms may come and go for individuals, along with the severity of a symptom may fluctuate for your loved one.
Hoehn-Yahr Staging
This is a common tool used to describe the motor symptoms an individual with Parkinson’s Disease is experiencing. You may hear your loved one's doctor discuss their current stage and what that means for their possible motor symptoms.
There are five stages to this assessment tool including:
- Stage 1: Motor symptoms only affect one side of the body.
- Stage 2: Motor symptoms affect both sides of the body.
- Stage 3: The individual's balance will be impacted.
- Stage 4: The individual experiences difficulty with walking and may require the use of a walking aide (walker, cane).
- Stage 5: The individual experience great difficulty with walking and can not walk independently. This individual requires help from another person to complete walking or transfers.
