Types of Support Care

Supportive care refers to outside assistance that can help support the individual that has Parkinson’s Disease and their care partner during this journey.

There are several different types of supportive care depending on the level of assistance that is needed for the individual with Parkinson’s Disease or the care partner.

  • In-home care refers to outside assistance coming to your home to assist with your needs. There are three types of in-home care, including:
    • Family & Friends: These are individuals that you trust and are willing to assist with assigned tasks.
    • Home Care: This service is unskilled assistance provided to someone. Many home care assistance programs can assist ADLs (bathing, dressing, toileting), IADLS (Cleaning, cooking, medication reminders), companionship, and supervision. This type of service is typically not covered by insurance and requires out-of-pocket payment.
    • Home Health: Requires a doctor's prescription and the individual receiving the services must be homebound. This service can assist with medication management, administering medications, and providing therapies (Occupational, Physical, and Speech). Covered typically through insurance.
  • Facility care refers to you and your loved one going to an outside service to receive assistance. There are two types of facility care, including:
    • Day Program: This service offers socialization and supervision for the individual with Parkinson’s Disease. Depending on the facility they can remind/administer medication. Will assist with basic ADLs (toileting/dressing as needed). Typically, not covered by insurance.
  • Facility-Based Long-Term Care: Can be assisted living facilities or a nursing home. Each facility will have different requirements for their assisted living facilities and nursing home, but the individual with Parkinson’s Disease will be placed in the most appropriate place.
    • Often long-term insurance will pay for extended/permanent stays.
    • Medicare will cover stays after a hospitalization (important Medicare will only cover if the individual was ADMITTED and not in for observation to the hospital for 3 days).
